Alex Pierce Rowland (L.P. Rowland) and Maggie Jenkins
Alex Pierce Rowland (often referred to as L.P. Rowland in records) was born in April 1852, the second son of John Rowland and Anna Brown. L.P. died of consumption on 4 May 1909; he spent his entire life in Rutherford County. He married Margaret M. Jenkins ("Maggie") on 15 January 1880 in Rutherford County. Maggie was born in June 1863, possibly in Bedford County; her parents have not yet been identified.
According to the 1880 census, "Allex" was employed at a saw mill; he and his wife, Maggie, both indicated to enumerators that they could read and write. The couple lived next door to his brother, Henry Rowland, and eight houses away from Mary Jane Underwood and her sister, Emiline Rowland; Mary Jane's son, James Underwood, also worked at the sawmill. In 1890, L.P. Rowland and his cousin, Columbus C. Underwood, lost their lease on a mill they operated together in Rutherford County when the new owner of the property defaulted on his mortgage and the court ordered the property to be sold.
According to the 1900 census, Maggie indicated that she had borne six children and that all six were still alive at that time. Maggie probably died in either late 1909 or early 1910; L.P.'s marital status was given as "married" in his 1909 death certificate, but by 1910, Maggie can no longer be found in the census and her three youngest children are all enumerated in the household of her eldest daughter, Tidy Lamb. By 1912, Tidy herself had died, and Maggie's surviving children Annie, Mary, "Horace", "E.A.", and Harry, and her grandchildren Marvin W. and Joe P. Lamb (Tidy's sons), petitioned the Rutherford County Court to sell a 1.5 acre property in the 10th Civil District that had belonged to their parents and to divide the proceeds among them.
