Lucy Rowland and James Brown

Lucy A. Rowland was born around 1810/11 in Virginia and died in 1879. She married James Anthony BROWN on 20 December 1836 in Rutherford County, TN; he was the son of Lent Brown and Nancy Caroline Windrow. James died in 1900.

County records for James and Lucy have conflicting information about their property ownership. According to Rutherford County's tax rolls for 1849, James and Lucy owned no land and were charged for one poll; in the 1850 census, they told enumerators that they owned no property. However, Rutherford County deed books record a sale by James of a 130.1-acre parcel at the headwaters of Overall's Creek to his brother, Pleasant Watkins Brown, for $275; James indicated that he had received the land in a grant on 7 December 1846 (grant #18362).

James and Lucy appear to have struggled financially, at least for a while; after selling his 130 acres to Pleasant, James took out a loan for $150 from his brother the following year, using his furniture and livestock as collateral.

James and Lucy spent their entire married life in Rutherford County. They were enumerated in the 1850 census in Rutherford County, along with their children Henry, Clara, Mary, and Dandridge. In 1860, all their children still lived at home, but by 1870, Henry had died (a casualty of the Civil War) and Clara no longer appears. In 1880, James was a widower living with his daughter, Mary; his sister Eliza Rowland was enumerated in the household, probably during a visit with her brother. The 1880 mortality census includes a record for Lucy, indicating that she had died the previous year, apparently of a stroke.

Both Henry and Molly Brown are buried at the Rowland Hill Cemetery in Rutherford County. Henry's tombstone inscription reads: --"Henry Thompson Brown, died as prisoner at Franklin Tennessee, 1863. Oldest son of James A. and Lucy Rowland Brown." Most of the tombstones at the Rowland cemetery disappeared in the 1930s, but the Rutherford County Historical Association's research indicates that Molly is buried there and was said to be the last enterred at Rowland Hill.
