John Davis (II) and Mourning Guffey
We have a few tidbits of information about John Davis (II) and his family, but not much. According to “Early Times in Clinton County,” he was born on 12 Dec 1758 in Virginia, either in Amherst or Augusta County. John was a Revolutionary War veteran who enlisted in January 1776 in Botetourt County.
According to his Revolutionary War files, he took part in a battle at Ginns Island, where the militia fought against the forces of Lord Dunmore. While stationed at Williamsburg, he became ill and was released from service. AFter he regained his health, he again enlisted in late 1780 or early 1781 with the 12th Virginia Regiment. He took part in the battle of Jamestown under General Wayne and was at the Siege of Yorktown where he was slightly injured. He was discharged after the surrender of the British garrison there.
Various sources identify Mourning Guffey as his wife, but we have not yet located a marriage record or other confirming source for this. Regardless, John’s wife had died by the time he passed away in 1841. His final pension payment record lists six surviving children: Polly Mason, Nancy Mays, Sarah Hopkins, John Davis, Elizabeth McCollum, and James Davis. His link to John Davis (III) is confirmed through land records, in which he deeded land to sons John and James Davis; this property was the same that was subsequently parcelled out in the ex parte division of John Davis’s (III) estate to his widow and children.
