George Branham and Elender (or Eleanor) Maloney

We are just beginning to thoroughly research records on this family but are putting out what little data we currently have in the interest of sharing information with other Branham researchers.

George Branham was born in North Carolina on 11 December; the 1850 and 1860 censuses both indicate his year of birth was 1790, and the 1870 census puts it around 1787. George died on 3 September 1873 in Clinton County, Kentucky (dates from his tombstone). Several other researchers have identified his father as Barnabas Branham, born about 1745 in Virginia (probably Westmoreland County) and died around 1830, probably in the Cumberland County KY area. According to another researcher, this Barnabas was the son of Michael Branham, who died around 1761 in Westmoreland County, Virginia, and his wife Rosannah Ellis.

George married Elender Maloney (or, Eleanor/Elinor), probably in Anderson County, TN; she was the daughter of John Maloney and Margaret Kinkead. According to probate, deed, and census records, George and Elender had four children: son Barnabas, and daughters Margaret and Mary ("Polly"); the 1830 census shows a third daughter (aged 5-10), who may have died by 1840 when the household included only one male (15-20) and one female (15-20) (Margaret married about 1836 and was no longer at home).

George and Elender moved from Tennessee to Cumberland County by 1830, where they lived in the part of the county that in 1836 became Clinton County. George was a relatively prosperous farmer who owned a fair amount of property that, at his death, was bequeathed to his wife, his daughter Polly, and the surviving children of his deceased children Barnabas and Margaret. According to her tombstone, Elender was born on 18 September 1803 and died 26 July 1884; however, her birth year was probably closer to 1800 or 1801, judging from census data.

George was a veteran of the War of 1812; we now have a copy of his discharge paper and will post a transcript or scanned copy soon. He received 160 acres of bounty land in what is now Cleburne County, Arkansas, in 1822; if anyone wants to try to plot this out and determine which county it would have originally been in (Cleburne County having been formed only in 1883), the patent description is Aliquot Parts: NW, Township 9N, Range 9W, Section 35, 5th meridian.
