Richard Brown and Frances Sexton
Richard Brown was the eldest son of John Brown and his wife Joan. Richard was probably born by 1710 in Virginia and died by April 1773 in St. Andrews Parish, Brunswick County, Virginia, when his estate was brought to probate. Richard married Frances probably in Brunswick County, but we have not yet found a marriage record.
Richard acquired a patent of land in 1727, along with John Brown, for 230 acres in Brunswick County, Virginia on the south side of the Roanoke River. He purchased 280 acres in Brunswick County from his father, John, on 7 March 1733. From 1733 to 1747, Richard bought and sold other tracts of land in Brunswick County.
Richard’s will, probated in 1773, helpfully identifies his wife and children by name. Frances’s will, probated in 1781, adds a few more details. Other entries in Brunswick County land and court records help fill out the family picture by providing further evidence linking the family together. However, at the moment the years of their children’s births are largely speculative.
