John Rowland and Anna Brown
John J. Rowland was born in 1823 in Tennessee and died about 1889 in Rutherford County. He married Anna M. Brown on 1 November 1848 in Rutherford County; she was the daughter of Lent Brown and Nancy Caroline Windrow. Anna was born in 1824 in Rutherford County and died sometime after 1891.
The names and exact number of children born to John and Anna are somewhat unclear. In 1850, John and Anna are found in Rutherford County with their infant son, Francis. In the 1870 census, a "Jim" Rowlin lived in Rutherford County with his wife Annie and children Allex, Mary, Henry, Arch, and Berry, along with 57-year-old Johnston Rowlin, whose relationship to "Jim" is unknown. In 1880, John's family included his wife Anna and children Berry, Mary, John A., Victoria, and Joseph J. (The ages of the children listed in 1870 are consistent with the children identified in 1880.) The division of John's estate in 1891 identified the deceased John as the father of F.M., L.P., H.H., J.A., Mary A., Berry S., Johnson E., and Victoria.
According to Rutherford County's tax rolls for 1849, John owned no land and was charged for one poll. By 1867, he owned 33 acres of land valued at $300.
