Thomas Rowland and Elizabeth Smotherman
Thomas T. Rowland was born in 1825 in Tennessee and died 6 January 1863 in Coffee County, Tennessee. He married Elizabeth Smotherman on 29 September 1843 in Rutherford County; she was the daughter of Elijah Smotherman and Nancy Leathers. Elizabeth was born on 1 July 1824 in Tennessee and died on 18 January 1909 in Coffee County, Tennessee. Both Elizabeth and Thomas are buried in Butler Cemetery in Coffee County.
According to Rutherford County's tax rolls for 1849, Thomas owned no land and was charged for one poll. In 1850, Thomas and Elizabeth were enumerated in Rutherford County, along with their children Melissa, Martha, Mary, and infant son (James). In 1860, Thomas and Elizabeth were enumerated in the household of L. Rowland, who was probably Littleberry Rowland, his brother. They may have been in Rutherford County for a family visit, since their newly married daughter Mellissa apparently lived next door to Littleberry with her husband, T.H. Tucker. Thomas had purchased 100 acres in Coffee County in 1859 from Daniel Tucker, and regularly appeared in Coffee County tax rolls from 1857 to 1863.

Thomas said he was a tenant farmer in the 1850 census; according to the agricultural enumeration that year, he owned $10 of farm implements; 1 horse; 3 milch cows; 1 other cattle; 10 sheep; 20 swine; $135 livestock; 350 bushels of Indian corn; 50 bushels of oats; 4 bales of cotton; 10 lbs of wool; 7 bushels of sweet potatoes; 25 lbs of butter (T1135, Roll 3A, p 137, line 13).
