John Thrasher and Jane Thrasher
John Thrasher married his first cousin, Malinda Jane Thrasher, in Clinton County, KY, on 28 November 1866. At the outbreak of the Civil War, John's father, Uriah Thrasher, decided to remain in Tennessee, while his elder brother Isaac--Malinda's father--moved his family across the state line to Kentucky.
John served in both the Confederate and the Union armies during the war, enlisting first with the 25th Tennessee Infantry (along with his three brothers) in 1861 at the age of 19 and later in 1864 with the 145th Indiana Infantry under the name of John Cannon. In his Union pension application, he said he had enlisted in the Confederate Army because "they were there with their fifes, drums, etc. I was nothing but a boy and had run away from my father and I went in partly to get away from home and too my sympathies were with the South."
John and his brothers Isaac, William, and Robert were all in the Battle of Stones' River near Murfreesboro TN; Isaac and William were both captured and sent to POW camps in the north (William died at Camp Douglas), and John and Bob both later deserted.
After their marriage, John and Jane remained in Kentucky the rest of their lives, raising their nine children in Cumberland County. John was a farmer; he claimed (and received) an invalid pension based on his Union Civil War service.
