Johanna McCarthy was the daughter of John McCarthy and Catherine Sullivan, according to Massachusetts vital records. Johanna's obituary in a Worcester MA newspaper identified her origin in Ireland as Bally Trasna parish, Ballyhar, County Kerry.
Another researcher reports that one of Johanna's brothers was a James McCarthy, three of whose sons also emigrated to Massachusetts about the same time as Johanna and her husband, Bartholomew Houlihan, and that they lived for a while with Johanna and her family.
