John Davis and Nancy Hamilton
At this point, our information about John Davis and Nancy Hamilton is pretty thin. According to "Early Times in Clinton County", John Davis married Nancy Hamilton on 4 July 1820 in Cumberland County, Kentucky. Census records for their children indicate that John was born in Tennessee ("Early Times" puts his birthplace as Sevier County). Nancy was born in Virginia, although we do not yet know which county; after John's death, probably around 1841, she married John Roberts, who then also died by 1850.
John Davis was the son of another John Davis, a Revolutionary War veteran, who was the son of yet another John Davis. (To help distinguish the three, we will refer to them as John Davis I, John Davis II, and John Davis III.)
Nancy (Hamilton) Roberts continued to live in Clinton County after John Roberts' death; she is enumerated there in 1850 with children Angeletta, James K., and Serena. In 1860, she is in the household of John Roberts (48, possibly a stepson), with Angeleta; and in 1870, she is living with her son, James K. Davis.
An 1868 mortgage/deed identifies John Davis and Nancy Hamilton as husband and wife, and also names five of their eight children: Elizabeth Dennis, wife of John I. Dennis of Clinton County, KY; Hamilton Davis; the "wife of B. Branham" (whom we know from various Clinton County vital records is Lavina Davis); James K. Davis; and Serena Sloan, wife of Charles Sloan. The census seems to indicate that Angeletta is also a daughter, leaving two other children yet unidentified. (According to the deed, John Davis bequeathed a 100-acre tract on Otter Creek in Clinton County to his wife and children; John Dennis, his son-in-law, had by 1868 acquired five of the "undivided ninths" of the original tract and used it as security for a mortgage.)
