Catherine Gough, most often called by her nickname of Kate, was the youngest child of Peter Gough and Letitia Nulty. According to her tombstone, she was born on 13 Jun 1852, though her baptismal entry records her birth as 13 Feb 1852. A schoolteacher by profession, she married William McNulty around 1874, though we have not yet located the marriage record.
Kate died about six weeks after her youngest child, Mary, was born.
Her younger son John had died the previous year, and her older son Peter passed away the following year. All are buried in the same grave at St. Gabriel’s Cemetery, along with Kate’s parents, Peter and Letitia (Nulty) Gough.
The widowed William was enumerated in Hazleton in 1880 with his small daughter, his (apparently) widowed sister Bridget O’Donnell, and Bridget’s children. Sadly, William then died in 1889, leaving young Mary an orphan. She appears to have remained in Hazleton the rest of her life, ultimately marrying Samuel Brill, with whom she had three children (John, William, and Catherine). She and Samuel are both buried at St. Gabriel’s Cemetery in Hazleton.
